Leaving for more meaning

The Great Resignation – it’s a blockbuster movie type of title that has put fear in employers but is the fear warranted? Article after article has listed how the big quit movement has swept across the US and there has been claims that it soon will hit the Australian shores. On the other hand, there are also reports listing the reasons why we shouldn’t be so fearful and that whatever forces are at work in the US cannot be seen in Australia.

So what’s true, and does it really matter? Regardless of what’s happening our focus remains the same – ensure your talent are able to create meaning at work. We can dial up, or down, flexibility in regards to where we work, we can offer incentives or install table tennis tables and trampolines (like I had at my previous job) but does that really matter if we cannot find a certain level of meaning in the work we do? These all just increase the culture of shopping around for greater deals, and while that is one way to create a career… it’s not the way to build a sustainable business of great culture and teams.

Support your people throughout their career and life, offer learning opportunities and the freedom to grow as a whole human and they will not only stay but attract more great talent who also seeks meaning. These are not dials, these are levers that can pivot businesses on to new tracks towards greatness.
