About John Mitchell

John holds a Masters Degree in Leadership and Management, with distinction, from the Curtin University Graduate Business School.

He has extensive experience working in complex and challenging environments at an executive level in both the public and private sectors. This experience includes terms as Executive Director Corporate Services in the Ministry of Justice, Director Strategic and Business Services in the Department of Contract and Management Services, General Manager of the Central Great Southern Health and Aged Care Services, Director Prison Operations at WA Department of Corrective Services and four years as Chief Executive Officer of the Rottnest Island Authority. John also has experience as a manager in the construction industry and formally worked for a number of years in the United Kingdom Civil Service were he also held senior positions. For the last five years John has worked as a management consultant and coach.

As a consultant John has completed many significant contracts with a focus on leadership, change management, strategic planning, organisational development and conflict resolution. John has a valuable range of work experience in both private and public sectors that enables him to bring a meaningful and strategic perspective to organisational performance and planning, with clear insights into the commercial, operational and people needs of organisations. John's ability to present on these matters is enhanced by his experience, over a number of years, of successfully providing leadership in highly complex work environments.

John's particular areas of study and interest lie in leadership, change management, strategic planning and business ethics. In addition to consulting in these areas John has led many very successful training sessions for senior staff from public and private sector organisations across Australia and for international clients. He consults widely to both the public and private sectors, and recent work includes the management of a significant statewide cultural change initiative, a major contract compliance review, a statewide review of an organisational structure and strategic/business planning facilitation.

As a coach John has provided support and assistance to a wide range of clients in both the public and private sectors and at both executive and senior management level. He is sought after for his wide experience and easy manner, and has assisted many senior managers and leaders achieve their organisational and personal objectives. John takes responsibility for assisting his clients to achieve personal growth, enhance their management of self, and achieve their required outcomes through a combination of a renewed recognition of their own skills and abilities and the provision of tools and increased awareness gained through the coaching process.

His coaching style is founded on the establishment of a relaxed, open and effective relationship with his clients. It is only through the establishment of such a relationship that the clients required outcomes can be clearly articulated and understood. John believes that the role of the coach is to be supportive and to provide encouragement, but also to be willing to challenge and, where necessary, ask the difficult questions.
