Integral Theory: the Comprehensive Map of Human Capacities Explained

What is Integral Theory?

Integral Theory was made popular by Ken Wilber. According to Wilber, it was the result of “a cross-cultural comparison of most…known forms of human inquiry.” This integration of seemingly disparate forms of inquiry produce a comprehensive map of known human potential and capacities.

A major strength of Integral Theory is that it doesn’t require anyone to internalise anything that is new to them, but to simply follow directions toward the potential that they already have within. Integral Theory, as taught by Integral Development, helps clients fully realise and express the skill they intrinsically possess already.

Four Quadrants, Infinite Wisdom

Integral Theory is based on four quadrants that Wilber feels represent the dimensions of reality that all cultures possess. The four quadrants refer to elements that are present in all major human languages: I, we and it. Together, these represent reality from three different viewpoints. These three dimensions manifest in society as art, morals and science, or as “the Beautiful, the Good and the True.”

Wilber added a fourth element: “its,” the plural of “it.” When added together, it becomes Wilber’s four quadrants. The four quadrants include concepts from virtually every major influence on human development over 6,000 years.

According to Integral Theory, any important decision must take all four quadrants into consideration to provide a truly integrated approach. Failure to utilise any of the four quadrants results in a fragmented approach.

Bases of the Four Quadrants

The “I” quadrant is based on the intentional and includes psychotherapy, meditation, phenomenology, personal transformation and emotional intelligence. The “It” quadrant is behavioural and includes scientific analysis, empiricism, behavioural modification and quality control.

“We” is cultural and includes worldviews, corporate culture, postmodernism, multiculturalism and collective values. “Its” is social and incorporates social systems analysis, systems theory, communication networks, techno-economic modes and systems analysis.
