3 Leadership Traits That Help Teams Excel

Leadership Traits That Help Teams Excel

At Integral Development, we are always proud to explain that our leadership development programs are based on Ken Wilber’s Integral Theory. Integral Theory, often described as the “Theory of Everything,” draws from the best of over 5,000 years of human thought in fields such as spirituality, psychology and philosophy. It has been applied in more than thirty-five professional and academic disciplines, as disparate as art and organisational management.

While a “Theory of Everything” may seem very wide in scope and difficult to teach in a business setting, we also lay a firm foundation of fundamental management skills.

Here are three of the skills which we deem to be essential in a leader.

Trust

We cannot say this strongly enough: if your team does not trust you, they will not “go to war” for you. They need to know that you always have their backs, even when they make mistakes. When employees trust their leaders, it empowers them to take risks and come up with creative solutions by transcending their “comfort zones” on a regular basis. This results in both individual growth and organisational growth.

Empathy

Do you see your employees as numbers or objects, or do you see them as human beings who have concerns and problems that are every bit as valid as yours? Do you know who came to work happy this morning and who came to work concerned about a project or a personal situation?

While “old school” corporate training used to discourage leaders from empathising with employees, a plethora of studies, surveys and anecdotal data have proven that leaders who have empathy for their employees are more effective.

Mentorship

Mentorship is another situation in which everybody wins. Employees on their way up the ladder always want to know how to achieve their career goals within the organisation as quickly and smoothly as possible. From the other point of view, true leaders receive extreme gratification from mentoring someone and watching that person grow, professionally and personally.

Think back to when you were starting out. Who mentored you? How do you feel about that person today?
